qBittorrent Review

Fast and resource efficient, qBittorrent is an attempt to provide full uTorrent or Vuze functionality in a streamlined open source package. It allows prioritization, torrent querying, selective content download, torrent creation, and remote access, and includes a media player and built-in torrent search – all with no ads or crapware.

  • Open Source
  • Lightweight and efficient
  • Fully featured
  • Built-in video player

  • Not much

qBittorrent is available for Windows, OSX, Linux, FreeBSD, and Android.

qBittorrent is an open-source BitTorrent client based on libtorrent. This project is up-front about its goal: “The qBittorrent project aims to provide a Free Software alternative to µtorrent.” We definitely need one of those!

Because it’s based on libtorrent, it provides all the features you’d expect — the same ones found in Deluge. Its interface is designed to be similar to uTorrent. It’s available for Windows as well as Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD — and even OS/2!

qBittorrent’s feature-set and options closely resemble those of uTorrent, in fact the developers make that point quite clear in the intro on the home page:

The qBittorrent project aims to provide a Free Software alternative to µtorrent. Additionally, qBittorrent runs and provides the same features on all major platforms (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, OS/2, FreeBSD).

Essentially, if you’re already familiar with uTorrent, you’ll have no trouble assimilating to qBittorrent.
